2025 Form 5695 for Energy Tax Credits

2025 Form 5695 for Energy Tax Credits

In 2025, Form 5695 continues to be used by homeowners to claim the Residential Clean Energy Credit (Part I) and the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (Part II).

These credits are available for qualifying expenditures or property placed in service through December 31, 2025.

2025 Changes and Requirements

  • Qualified Manufacturer Identification Number (QMID): Starting January 1, 2025, taxpayers claiming the home improvement credit must include a unique four-character alphanumeric QMID on Form 5695 for each eligible item.
  • Enabling Property Reporting: A new line has been added to document the relationship between “enabling property” (e.g., electrical panels) and “enabled property” (e.g., heat pumps).
  • Condo/Co-op Checkbox: A new checkbox allows residents of condominiums or cooperatives to indicate they are claiming a fractional share of expenditures.

Credit Categories & Annual Limits

The maximum total annual credit for home improvements is generally $3,200, split into two distinct “buckets”:

  • General Energy Efficiency Limit ($1,200 Total):
  • Exterior Windows/Skylights: Capped at $600 total.
  • Exterior Doors: $250 per door, capped at $500 total.
  • Home Energy Audits: Capped at $150; must be performed by a Qualified Home Energy Auditor.
  • Other Systems: $600 limit each for central A/C, electric panels, and certain water heaters/furnaces.
  • Insulation: 30% of cost, capped within the $1,200 total bucket.

Heat Pumps & Biomass Systems ($2,000 Total):

  • Includes electric or natural gas heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, and biomass stoves/boilers.
  • This limit is separate from the $1,200 general cap.
  • Clean Energy Credit (No Specific Cap):
  • Covers 30% of the cost for solar electric, solar water heating, wind energy, geothermal heat pumps, and battery storage ( 3 kWh).
